United Nations officials have taken charge of a Saudi teenager who defied deportation from Thailand. Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunoon says she's fleeing abuse – and barricaded herself in a Bangkok hotel room to avoid being returned to her family.
The 18-year-old, who says she renounced Islam and fled her abusive family while traveling in Kuwait, is to be allowed to stay in Thailand while the UN evaluates her case. She sent out pleas for help via Twitter.
The Saudi teenager fled her family and reached a hotel at Bangkok airport from where she sent out appeals for help via social media. The UN has taken up her case and asked Australia to welcome her.
A Saudi teenager seeking asylum has flown out of Thailand, heading for Canada via South Korea. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Ottawa has granted asylum to Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun.
A Saudi teenager who said she was abused by her family has arrived in Canada, where she has been granted asylum. The woman had barricaded herself in a hotel in Thailand fearing she would be deported back to Saudi Arabia.
