Ukraine's women step in to fill critical roles during war

The war in Ukraine has left key jobs vacant, as hundreds of thousands of men have become soldiers. Women are stepping up to take roles once dominated by men — including in emergency services like firefighting.

In Ukraine's western Rivne region, 21 women form the country's first female volunteer fire brigade. For over a year, they've trained with professionals and worked alongside state emergency services, often first on the scene to fight fires. Starting with just eight members, the team now includes teachers, accountants, and council employees. Despite early doubts, they've proven vital in wartime, with plans for more training and new recruits soon.
