Somali migrants have been a focus of the current US administration with President Donald Trump calling them "garbage" who "contribute nothing" and should "go back to where they came from."

Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, which has the US's largest Somali community, is the latest area targeted by the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

The operation has drawn intense criticism from local and state officials who have slammed Trump's rhetoric and pledged to protect the Somali community.

About 80,000 Somalis live in Minnesota, the vast majority of whom are US citizens, according to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

Most Somalis born outside the US arrived as refugees from Somalia's decades-long civil war, which started in 1991 and triggered an exodus of more than 1 million people.

In this episode of AfricaLink, Adwoa Tenkoramaa Domena speaks with DW's Mohammed Kahiye in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, and gets reactions from community leaders in Minnesota.
