Species having different genders have various biological advantages. Sexual reproduction increases genetic diversity, and boosts our bodies' defenses against infectious diseases. In the animal kingdom the tasks assumed by males and females vary.
Instead of "male" or "female," intersex people in Germany can now identify themselves as "diverse" on official ID papers. However, more work lies ahead for better protection and recognition, writes DW’s Pacinthe Mattar.
