We do it all the time without giving it any thought – breathing. We inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. But air doesn't only contain the gases we need but also harmful particulate matter.

What’s in the air we breathe?

The air we breathe contains vital respiratory gases and a lot more besides. The main components are nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon dioxide. But it also contains particulate matter that can harm us.

Air pollution and the dangers of particulate matter 

Particulate matter enters our lungs as we breathe. It can then enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation. Research has shown that air pollution and particulate matter make it more likely that a case of Covid-19 will be severe rather than mild.

Aerosols – the danger lurking in the air 

Aerosols are tiny droplets released when we talk, sing, cough or sneeze. They can hang in the air for hours. Aerosols emitted from somebody who is infected with the coronavirus can spread virus particles.
