The location of Edward Snowden remains unclear after he failed to turn up for a flight from Moscow to Havana on Monday. Snowden is on the run from the US for leaking intelligence documents.
Ecuadorian authorities are about to expel WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from their London embassy, investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald reported. Assange was granted asylum in 2012 to avoid extradition to the US.
Edward Snowden called on a Berlin audience via livestream to stand up and act on their freedoms – without asking permission. He also hinted at a new encryption technology he's co-developing to circumvent surveillance.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that Snowden can continue to stay in the country. The announcement came one day after Obama commuted fellow whistleblower Chelsea Manning's prison sentence.
The woman is suspected of providing a news outlet with a secret document describing Russian interference in the US election. The move comes from a justice department already known for its hostility to whistleblowers.
