Rwanda banned second hand clothes imports in 2018. The ban was aimed at boosting its textile industry. As a result the US ended Rwandan duty free export privileges. But the country has adapted remarkably well.
US President Donald Trump has suspended duty-free treatment for apparel products from Rwanda. What appears to be a trade war between the US and one of the smallest countries in Africa, reveals a US-China rivalry.
Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda plan to ban all imports of second-hand clothing in order to strengthen their textile industry. But with the US threatening consequences, EAC leaders have agreed to a small compromise.
