Workers on the NGO-operated Ocean Viking rescued nearly 200 migrants on small, overcrowded boats as they tried to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. Hundreds of thousands have attempted similar crossings in recent years. Since 2015, more than 19,000 are confirmed to have died while attempting the sea crossing.
