In Hamburg, local children are learning what goes into putting out fires. It’s all part of a special program to recruit the next generation of volunteer firefighters.
Three villages were evacuated in the northern German state of Brandenburg as 400 hectares of forest went up in flames outside Berlin. The fire ignited World War II and Soviet munitions dumped in the ground.
Italian planes and Norwegian helicopters have been deployed to help tackle more than 40 large blazes across central Sweden. Fires were also registered in the country's northernmost county in the Arctic Circle.
During a visit to wildfires-hit California, the US president had said Finland routinely raked its forests to foil fires. Finnish President Sauli Niinisto responded, saying he was not sure where Trump got the idea.
French rescue teams are still searching for a German man who went missing after a flash flood swept through a German-owned campsite in the Gard region. A police enquiry has begun into the case.
