Janelle Dumalaon

US correspondent focusing on the economic impacts of shifting domestic and foreign policies, from the White House to small-town America

Janelle is passionate about reporting on the US, exploring how changes in policy affect the economy and resonate globally, from urban centers to rural communities.

Janelle’s beat is the United States. Much of her work follows the Trump administration’s remaking of domestic and foreign policy, with a particular focus on the economic fallout of that project.

From the White House to struggling Midwest farms and border cities hit hard by shifting trade rules, she has traveled the country to see what’s really happening to the American dream.

What she finds on the ground often echoes far outside the US. Before moving to Washington, living in Saudi Arabia, the Philippines and Germany gave her a feel for how US decisions land far beyond American borders. Reporting for DW has allowed her to examine the intersection of domestic politics and global consequences, where debates on trade, technology, immigration, and security reshape both markets and alliances.
