November's reintroduction of US sanctions on Iran's oil industry have hit its economy hard. Iranians are now bracing themselves for further restrictions due to take effect in May.
Mehmet Hakan Atilla was arrested in 2017 after a witness said he helped organize a multi-billion dollar scheme to bypass US oil sanctions against Iran. The case had implicated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard told state TV the foreign tanker was smuggling fuel through the Persian Gulf. Recent incidents involving vessels in the region have led to escalating tensions between Tehran and the West.

President Donald Trump has said the US Navy shot down an Iranian drone after a ship took "defensive action." Earlier, Iran said it had seized a foreign oil tanker, accusing it of smuggling oil in the Persian Gulf.
