As we have seen, Germany's Social Democrats are meeting in Hamburg for their annual conference. The party is eager to win back voters ahead of key state elections next year. And SPD leader Kurt Beck has clearly decided that the best way to do that is to polish up the party's left-wing credentials. That in turn means watering down some of the economic reforms introduced by another social democrat -- former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. And, as we see now, Kurt Beck appears to have broad backing within his party.
