In southern France, swimmers take part in the "Monte Cristo challenge" at the Chateau d'If off Marseille. It's a tribute to Alexandre Dumas’ "The Count of Monte Cristo," in which Edmond Dantes, the count, escapes from the chateau's island prison.

Paris is aiming to boost its bid for the 2024 Olympics by turning some of its world-famous landmarks over to sports for two days, with 100-meter races on a track floating on the Seine, high-diving into the river, cycling around the Arc de Triomphe and other events to showcase the French capital's suitability for the games.

The trophy, which was first won in 1851 by the US schooner "America," was to be "a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations." However, the history of the cup has been anything but friendly at times, with the tournament sometimes overshadowed by costly legal feuds and bitter personal battles.

The streets of Pakistan's cities are lit up during celebrations after the country's cricket team defied the odds to thrash rival India in the Champion's Trophy final in London. Over the past decade, India has dominated the cricketing contest between the two countries and was the firm favorite going into the final. This made victory all the sweeter for the Pakistanis.

Two long-tailed mayflies perform a dance on the river Tisza in central Hungary. Mayflies or shad flies are aquatic, short-lived insects who engage in a frantic rush to mate before they perish in just a few hours during the "Tisza blooming" from late spring to early summer every year.

A green spot is encircled by a field of poppies in the state of Brandenburg, Germany. As well as being home to much agriculture, the Spreewald region is a biosphere reserve situated 100 km (62 miles) southeast of Berlin, and is known for its more than 200 small irrigation canals with a total length of 1,300 km.

France marked its hottest June day since World War II on Wednesday as overheated residents across swathes of Europe coped with another day of sizzling temperatures. A nationwide average of 26.4 degrees Celsius (79.5 Fahrenheit) made it the hottest June day in France since 1945, the national weather agency said, with the thermometer hitting 37 C in some parts of the country.
