Local officials say residents of a nearby village had surrounded the tankers and were siphoning off fuel when the airstrike was called in. But the provincial governor has also said at least one high-ranking Taliban official and several Chechen fighters were among those killed. It will be difficult to ever get a confirmation on the exact numbers. But it is likely that the Taliban will use the strike as another way to recruit members for the insurgency.
