Concerns about the rule of law and corruption in Hungary led the EU to trigger its rule of law conditionality mechanism against the country in April 2022, and subsequently suspend €6.3 billion ($6.79 billion) in funding. Another €37 million in EU funding for Erasmus and Horizon Europe programs could be frozen unless reforms are introduced at foundation-managed universities in Hungary.
