Heinz-Christian Strache has stepped down as Austrian vice chancellor following an alleged corruption scandal. Strache was caught on video apparently offering business deals in exchange for friendly media coverage.
After 17 months in office, the chancellor's former coalition partners, as well as the opposition, no longer have confidence in him. The vote was an unnecessary piece of political drama, Norbert Mappes-Niediek writes.
Austria is set to hold fresh elections in September following the collapse of the ruling coalition. Sebastian Kurz said he could no longer work with the FPÖ after a corruption scandal ensnared his vice chancellor.
