April 13, 2012The clinic also training up to 300 medical students every year. More than 60 medical technicians are employed in the workshops, producing prostheses and other replacement products. 30 in-patient operations are carried out every day: that’s a stunning 700 a year!
The episodes show surgeons at work, describing the risks and also the limits of their art. Viewers are offered insights into highly emotional tragedies but also tales of happiness. There’s good news when it comes to medical breakthroughs deemed impossible just a few years ago!
Part 1
This five-part series tells moving stories from the perspectives of the patients, their mothers, fathers, wives and friends as well as from that of their doctors. This episode features eight-year-old Veronika, who, because of the rare Proteus syndrome, suffers from enormous feet. For years her adoptive parents looked for a doctor who could help reduce the size of Veronika’s feet. Then they found Wolfram Wenz, "Dr Foot” at the orthopedic clinic in Heidelberg. Veronika’s case is one of the biggest challenges of the foot surgeon’s career to date.

Part 2
Dr Rickert is an experienced orthopedic specialist and surgeon. Nevertheless the case of Walter Meisel baffles him: why is he having such problems with his artificial knee? Is Walter Meisel a pain patient? Despite the doubts of his colleague from the pain clinic, he decided to replace the joint with a new model. How is Walter Meisel faring after the operation? Meanwhile Wolfram Wenz and his team reach their limits during Veronika’s operation. The surgeon has to deconstruct the foot into its components and put it back together again.

Part 3
Dirk Tiefenbach has had nine operations in just under three years. He broke his shin in an accident. The bone didn’t want to grow back together again and in the end he was even told that the only thing that could help him was to have his leg shortened. Then he found the expert in Heidelberg who he had been looking for so desperately: Professor Schmidmaier. He wants to make Dirk’s bone grow again with the help of stem cells and growth accelerators. And there’s good news: Veronika is allowed home and sings a goodbye song for Dr Wenz who operated on her giant foot.

Part 4
Veronika can already take dance classes with her operated foot. Dirk Tiefenbach can finally start running again after three years. Patient Andrea Bachmann was overpowered by a wave while on holiday in Tenerife and has been paralyzed ever since. A disk in the cervical spine was catapulted into her spine. Now she’s setting her hopes on a recently developed robotic walker. This piece of medical equipment is meant to teach the destroyed nerves to reorganize themselves faster. Could she become her old self again?

Part 5
Veronika meets her two doctors again. Andrea Bachmann is training intensively with the robotic walker after becoming paralyzed while on holiday in Tenerife. Hüseyin Türk is having surgery on an intervertebral disk. At first everything goes smoothly, but a week later he feels excruciating pain in his back. There’s no doubt about it: a disk has slipped again. It’s a risk that usually lies between three and eight percent! Only a further operation can help. But Hüseyin Türk doesn’t trust doctors anymore. He doesn’t want to go back under the knife.
