Climate activist and initiator of the Fridays for Future strikes Greta Thunberg has called for unified action to meet the challenges of the climate crisis.
Thunberg's speech to thousands of protesters was punctuated by a counterrally organized by a pro-oil group. Thunberg's visit comes days before an election in which climate change promises to be a contentious issue.
Speaking to the US Congress, the teenage climate activist has urged lawmakers to take action on the "existential crisis" of climate change. Thunberg criticized the US for being the "biggest carbon polluter" in history.
Seen by many as unambitious, Germany's 2030 climate plan, released the day of a global climate strike and now approved by the government, reflects past public ambivalence to climate action. But that is quickly changing.
