Senior German government officials face a grilling over what they knew about allegations of fraud at Wirecard. In June, the payment service provider imploded after bosses admitted to a €1.9 billion balance sheet hole.
The former boss of the collapsed financial tech company Wirecard is to be on the run. German authorities have issued a rare public appeal for help to track down Jan Marsalek, who is accused of running "gang-type fraud."
Germany's Financial Intelligence Unit reportedly only handed over a small number of reports containing information related to Wirecard. The Munich public prosecutor said "only two" were received before June 2020.
The German parliament's finance committee has convened a special session to question two of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Cabinet ministers about their knowledge of Wirecard's multibillion-euro alleged fraud.
As Germany deals with the collapse of Wirecard, an online payment giant accused of fraud, a key executive said he would help investigators. The scandal put Finance Minister Olaf Scholz in his rivals' crosshairs.
