Faith Matters

November 3, 2013

Ten years ago, two German doctors conceived the idea of building a modern, hi-tech hospital at the foot of the Andes – to serve the poverty-stricken descendants of Peru’s indigenous people, the Incas. Ten years ago, two German doctors conceived the idea of building a modern, hi-tech hospital at the foot of the Andes – to serve the poverty-stricken descendants of Peru’s indigenous people, the Incas. With a lot of hard work and strengthened by their Christian faith, the surgeon Klaus John and his wife Martina, a pediatrician, have now turned that dream into reality. ‘Diospi Suyana’ – a Quechua phrase meaning ‘We trust in God’ – is one of the country’s most modern hospitals and provides first class medical treatment in the ‘Poorhouse of Peru’.

Some of Germany’s most prominent physicians spend their vacations in ‘Diospi Suyana’, working as volunteers. Doctors, civil engineers and other specialists offer their services - most of them without payment. But ‘Diospi Suyana’ is even more than a lifeline to the poorest of Peru’s poor, it is a testimony to the faith and courage of a remarkable couple.
