Campaigners think German firms should be accountable for the human rights abuses committed along their supply chains. Some businesses say it's too difficult to police, but others would welcome a "level playing field."
More and more Western firms are relying on the vast Chinese market for their sales and profits. But doing business in China means toeing the Communist Party's line and any criticism can cost them business.
German businesses have already been suffering from the negative effects of Brexit, said Holger Bingmann, head of the foreign trade industry group BGA, pointing out losses to German exporters worth €3.5 billion this year.
Several Bundesliga clubs are active in China. As the recent controversy involving the NBA has demonstrated, while the potential financial rewards are enormous, doing business with Chinese partners can be challenging.
