China wins 1st gold medal of London Olympics

Yi Siling claimed the first of 302 gold medals at the London Games in the women's 10-meter air rifle at Royal Artillery Barracks on Saturday. Sylwia Bogacka of Poland took silver, and Yi's teammate, Yu Dan, bronze.

Yi scored a total of 502.9, failing to reach her own world record by 2.7 rings. Bogacka, who had looked like the winner until the sixth and eighth rounds, scored 502.2. Yu racked up 501.5, relegating defending champion Katarina Emmons of the Czech Republic to fourth with 500.3.

The top-ranked Chinese woman shooter, Yi, 23, will be able to add her new medal to the gold she won at the 2010 World Championships in Munich.

Germany's Jessica Mager and Beate Gauss placed 20th and 32nd respectively, excluding them for the final of the best eight.
