Storms have caused death and damage in France and Britain, disrupting Christmas celebrations. Winds of up to 145 kph (90 mph) hit both sides of the channel, while power outages affected hundreds of thousands of homes.
After days of exceptional heat, the rains came in dramatic fashion across northern Germany. Several people were injured by falling trees and travel was severely disrupted.
Heavy rains, hail as well as thunder and lightning swept across Germany's Eifel region on Sunday night. The city of Aachen was particularly hard hit by the summer-like storm. No one was hurt.
At least five people have been killed by a powerful nor'easter that slammed into the US East Coast and Midwest, bringing snow, rain and hurricane-force winds. A flight into Dulles Airport also faced a rough landing.
As record amounts of late-winter snow cover areas of northern Europe, a new storm from the south has brought freezing rain and thunderstorms to the continent. Subzero temperatures have killed dozens since last Friday.
