The German Chancellor has been praised both in Germany and abroad for her leadership during the coronavirus crisis. In contrast to other countries, opinion surveys indicate most Germans trust their government to chart a course through the pandemic.

The chancellor reportedly told a closed-door meeting of conservative lawmakers that Germany is already in a "third wave," and warned against a hasty reopening.
Around 60% of Germans surveyed for a new poll said they were in favor of immunity passports. Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed her support, albeit only when most residents have been offered the shot.
Germans have started to feel worn-out by the coronavirus lockdown. Psychiatrists and psychologists have warned that a further extension could have severe long-term effects on society and mental health.
European Union leaders have met virtually to hash out coronavirus issues. Progress was promised on vaccines, though questions remain over border closings and travel.
