Gunmen in combat gear took control of Crimea's two main airports overnight, after taking over its parliament on Thursday.
The German chancellor has said lifting EU sanctions on Russia is off the table until a "real ceasefire" is achieved in Ukraine. The bloc introduced the measures after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The Russian Orthodox Church has downgraded "diplomatic relations" with Istanbul-based Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. Bartholomew I has been accused of "anti-canonical activities" for sending bishops to Ukraine.
Ukraine has called on Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to grant it independence from the Russian Orthodox Church. It would be a huge blow to Russia, where the church plays an important role in politics.
People in Crimea are experiencing unusual symptoms after reports of an incident at a titanium plant. Authorities claim there is no threat to public health on the peninsula, but children have nonetheless been evacuated.
