A look at the most beautiful supermoon moments worldwide
The December supermoon, also known as the Cold Moon, lit up the night sky on December 4. It cast its glow across scenic landscapes — and captivated moon watchers worldwide.

So close to heaven
A supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth, making it appear up to 7% larger and 30% brighter than usual. This rare phenomenon was particularly striking for this couple in Aguimes, Spain, who captured the magical moment on camera.
Pale beauty
On the island of Malta, the November supermoon hung pale and heavy over the town of Marsa. On average, there are one to three supermoons per year. Since the moon's orbit is elliptical, the appearance of the supermoon is never guaranteed and never the same. Some years there are no supermoons at all, while others have up to four. In 2025, there were three.
Bright star in the night sky
Behind Christmas lights, the supermoon shone bright and clear in the sky above Panama.
Moon tourism
Many "moon tourists" in Sydney, Australia, were drawn to a rock formation on the coast of North Bondi, from where the impressive celestial spectacle could be observed particularly well in November. The term Cold Moon originates from the traditions of the Indigenous peoples of North America, who gave each full moon its own name to mark the changing seasons.
Skyward snapshot
In Punta Arenas, Chile, moon enthusiasts tilted their smartphones to take a few snapshots of the supermoon. But the limited focal length of the cellphone camera makes the striking view unspectacular on the display. What we perceive as large and bright with the naked eye appears small and distant in phone photos.
Group event
In Porto Alegre, Brazil, the moon was seen through the Monumento aos Acorianos, arguably the city's most famous landmark. The monument commemorates the settlers from the Azores who came to the region in the 18th century, figures that represent community and solidarity.
Bright backdrop
The silhouette of the Madonnina statue on Milan Cathedral stood out against the city skyline in the light of the supermoon.
Round companion
In Germany, the moon remained hidden behind clouds and fog in many places. Other names for the supermoon late in the year include Winter Moon, Hunter's Moon and Beaver Moon.
City lighting
The moon appeared particularly bright in the city of Cairo, with the citadel of Salah ad-Din providing a fitting setting.
Artistic silhouette
In Encinitas, California, the November supermoon transformed this park scene into a small work of art. According to the current astronomical calendar, the next supermoon will take place on May 5, 2026.
