"International broadcasters have to keep the spotlight on Afghanistan"

At the annual meeting of France Médias Monde and DW, CEO Marie-Christine Saragosse and Director General Peter Limbourg spoke about the importance of journalism in Afghanistan and joint European media projects.

"With the deteriorating situation for media and journalists in Afghanistan, reliable information for people in that country is vital. While keeping their teams safe wherever they are, international broadcasters have to keep the spotlight on Afghanistan, as it becomes more difficult for local journalists to work and report freely about the dramatic changes the country is undergoing," Saragosse and Limbourg said in a joint statement.

InfoMigrants now available in six languages, with the addition of Bengali

Amid the situation in Afghanistan, InfoMigrantsonce again showed in recent months its relevance as an international public service. France Médias Monde and Deutsche Welle launched this service, which is co-financed by the European Union, with Italian news service Ansa in 2017. This summer, more users were reached in Dari and Pashto than ever before. A sixth language, Bengali, was added this spring and instantly attracted an audience. More than ever, InfoMigrants is providing these vulnerable people with trustworthy information, wherever they are, in French, English, Arabic, Dari, Pashto and Bengali, through digital media (website, social networks and messaging services), giving objective information to migrants who are exposed to a proliferation of unreliable information.

ENTR: the successful launch of a social network for young people in Europe

Another highlight in 2021 was the launch of ENTR , a multilingual choice of digital services for young people in Europe, developed by Deutsche Welle and France Médias Monde with ten European partners. In only five months, ENTR has logged over 16 million video views on social networks, in French, English, German, Polish, Romanian and Portuguese. Its steadily growing success is prompting both groups to expand this project with the European Union’s support, around all the topics that resonate with youths, ranging from climate change to employment and on to health and culture. ENTR is funded by the European Union, the German Foreign Office and the French Ministry of Culture.

Marie-Christine Saragosse: "The successful launch of ENTR is the result of an all-new venture, by teams of young people for young people. They are digital natives and are tapping into the experience that France Médias Monde and Deutsche Welle have acquired to build meaningful cross-border projects. The content reaches its target audience – 18- to 34-year olds – in the six languages, and particularly in French and Polish, which have the largest viewership. ENTR is fully serving its purpose, i.e. fostering conversations between young people in Europe, in their native language, and thus helping to nurture a shared European awareness."

French-German editorial co-productions on headline news in France and Germany

Pushing ahead with their shared editorial projects, Deutsche Welle and France Médias Monde recently co-produced television and online reports, programs and dual-location broadcasts about the German federal election, tapping into German journalists’ local insights and the international perspective from their peers based in France. Building on this experience, both groups will use a similar approach to cover the French presidential election in spring 2022.

Peter Limbourg: "We developed the concept of co-producing content for our international viewership with the idea in mind that reporting about events in Europe which are relevant for other regions in the world as well, could be improved by adding a broader European perspective. This has worked out very successfully. Reactions from our viewers and users around the world have encouraged us to plan similar co-productions for the upcoming election in France."
