A tour of the cultural treasures of Saxony will kick off DW's format Destination Culture / Ausfahrt Kultur, a new bilingual series airing November 6 on DW’s television and social media channels in English and German.
Season 1, titled "Discoveries in Saxony," features key cultural destinations, from Prince Pueckler Park in Bad Muskau, August Horch Museum in Zwickau and watch manufacturers in Glashuette to Meissen Porcelain Museum, Haus Schminke in Loebau and Leipzig Cotton Mill.
On November 4, the Tourismus Marketing Gesellschaft Sachsen (TMGS) and DW invited regional media outlets and politicians to a preview screening in the town of Radebeul, one of the filming locations.
Saxony’s State Minister for Culture and Tourism Barbara Klepsch: "The broadcast series Destination Culture combines the topics of travel and culture and presents a wonderful variety of attractions and sights in our country that are culturally unique and worth visiting. The multimedia format offers information and inspiration, beautiful imagery, and entertaining content. This broadcast helps us to present Saxony's rich cultural heritage to a worldwide audience, and to promote it as a travel destination."
DW Director General Peter Limbourg: "Saxony is one of Germany's richest and most diverse cultural landscapes, and therefore the perfect entry point for our format. Culture is a central broadcasting mandate of DW, and our editorial team puts heart and soul into producing innovative multimedia magazines and reports."
DW Managing Director of Programming Gerda Meuer: "We deliberately chose Saxony as the first filming location. We aim to inspire our young target groups and in Saxony, we can show how tradition and modernity come together."
DW Director Arts and Culture Rolf Rische, the creative mind behind the format, expects a lot of international interest: "The fact that Lonely Planet, probably the world's most important travel guide publisher, recently chose Leipzig as its top destination in Germany is further proof that we are spot on with our focus on Saxony in the first season of Destination Culture."
German-Scottish presenter Hannah Hummel traveled across Saxony in a rare-yet-typical German vehicle: a classic VW Beetle convertible. The car, which is over 40 years old, was converted to run on electric power. Connections between tradition and modernity also run a common thread through the seven-part Season 1. Each stop is a cultural highlight, and protagonists and influencers share their personal experiences.
The DW crew spent several days filming in Saxony between June and September. TMGS supported the station with content and organizational planning. TMGS Managing Director Veronika Hiebl: "The result is a wonderful tribute to Saxony's cultural and natural landscape as well as its hosts. We thank all partners in our tourism regions for their active support of the film project which conveys an inviting message."
The seven-part series can be watched from November 6 on the TV channels DW Deutsch, DW Deutsch+ and DW English, on YouTube and on dw.com. Selected locations will be featured in posts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
