Coordinator, Cooperativa Integral Catalana, Barcelona, Spain
Enric Duran Giralt rose to public attention in 2008 for the expropriation of €492,000 from 39 banks to be allocated to initiatives for social change. Today he is also known for advocating the Catalan Integrated Cooperative project, which in less than three years has become a living example of how to build a different society, bringing together thousands of people and hundreds of cooperative projects. At present, Duran faces prosecution, and 14 different companies demand that he serve eight years in prison. His actions in the present climate are a window into one of the most promising self-management experiences being developed in Europe.
