Rainer Wend was born in Gütersloh in 1954. He studied law at the universities of Marburg and Münster and left university in 1984 with the second State Exam.
In 1970 he joined the SPD. From 1994 to 2003 he was mayor of the city of Bielefeld. In 1998, Rainer Wend was elected directly from his electoral ward to the German Federal Parliament where he acted as spokesman for economic affairs and chairman of the Committee on Labour and Social Affairs from 2002 to 2008.
In 2009, Rainer Wend decided to give up his mandate at the German Federal Parliament and moved to Deutsche Post DHL as Executive Vice President Corporate Public Policy and Responsibility. In his position, he is responsible for political coordination, environmental strategy und sustainability as well as the group’s worldwide social engagement. Rainer Wend is married with 3 children.
