In this June 20, 2010 photo, men stand in an oil slick covering a creek near Bodo City in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. As U.S. officials now work to stanch the flow from the Gulf Coast spill, Nigeria remains mired in spills after 50 years of production by foreign firms eager for the country's easily refined fuel. Environmentalists estimate as much as 546 million gallons of oil have spilled into the country's Niger Delta during that time, roughly at a rate comparable to one Exxon Valdez disaster per year. A photograph made available 19 August 2010 shows the Chevron oil facility under contruction in Escravos, 56 miles from Warri in the oil rich Niger delta region of Nigeria 17 August 2010. Nigeria is the fifth largest exporter of oil to the United States and the largest producer of oil in Africa. For decades, thousands of spills across the fragile Niger Delta have hampered the livelihoods of fishermen and farmers, contaminated water sources and polluted the ground and air. Approximately 300 spills are estimated each year. Some are small and some are continuous leaks but compounded they continue to pollute the delta. A file picture dated Friday 17 September 2004 of the body of a dead Nigerian man in the mud in front of a column of smoke rising from an exploded pipeline after oil smugglers tried to cyphon off oil in Lagos, Nigeria where more than 40 were killed on . The oil price broke the 50$/barrel rate Tuesday 28 September 2004. One of the reasons being cited is the ongoing rebelion in Nigeria's oil rich delta region where local malitia have cripled Nigeria's 2.3 million barrels per day output. Nigerian rebels fighting for sovereignty of the oil-producing Niger delta have told oil companies, Royal Dutch Shell Group, Nigeria's largest oil producer, and Italy's Agip, to shut production before they begin an 'all-out war' on 01 October 2004. Nigeria is the world's seventh largest exporter of oil. dpa
