Kenya's National Assembly on 05 September passed a motion paving the way for the country to withdraw from the legal structures of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The move comes as Deputy President William Ruto is to face trial Tuesday in The Hague for crimes against humanity, allegedly committed during a wave of ethnic violence following disputed 2007 elections. President Uhuru Kenyatta is to face trial separately, also for alleged involvement in the violence, which left more than 1,000 people dead and displaced half a million. The ICC said that it would go ahead with trials anyway despite the country's pullout. EPA/DANIEL IRUNGU

According to a local report, five suspects, Kenyatta, former higher education minister William Ruto, suspended Industrialisation Minister Henry Kosgey, former police commissioner Maj-Gen Hussein Ali, and Head of Operation at KASS FM radio Joshua Arap Sang said on 09 March 2011 that they will honor summonses issued for the charges of crimes against humanity by the pre-trial chamber of the ICC.
