Torture Widespread in India: Human Rights Group

June 26, 2008

As the United Nations had declared Thursday, June 26, to be the “International Day in Support of Victims of Torture”, the Asian Centre for Human Rights in New Delhi has published a report about torture in India, digging out some alarming figures. According to official statistics published by India’s National Human Rights Commission, there have been almost 7,500 cases of death in Indian jails and police custody over the last 5 years. The human rights activists claim that many of them died after torture.
