Some analysts see Wall Street's troubles as a harbinger of the end of a neo-liberal philosophy often associated with US conservatism. Ronald Reagan ushered in an era of deregulation that carried over even into the Clinton Administration, when key banking laws were relaxed or repealed. Now, as governments commit billions of taxpayer dollars to restore liquidity and trust to the banking system, there are calls for a new international economic order that involves far tougher regulation.
