Germany has begun transporting food and humanitarian aid to Sudan to help 1.2 million refugees from the Darfur region in the western part of the country who are fleeing from militia groups. German planes also delivered trucks, generators, replacement parts and fresh water tanks to the area. The food comes from German Agro Action (Deutsche Welthungerhilfe) and aids the emergency relief operation by the UN refugee agency, UNHCR. The food shipments, which have only just started to arrive, can feed about 18,000 people. Another shipment is expected to arrive by the end of the week with enough food for 50,000 refugees.
