The Syrian opposition has withdrawn from peace talks, allegedly because of the deteriorating situation in Syria. Eyewitness videos show new bombing raids.
At least 30 civilians, including children, have been killed in shelling attacks and airstrikes in the rebel stronghold of Eastern Ghouta. A monitor has said a majority of the strikes were carried out by Russian jets.
The Turkish president has threatened to "clear Turkey's southern borders of terror" by targeting a Kurdish-held enclave in Syria. Turkish artillery has been shelling the area.
The terrorist organization "Islamic State" has largely been defeated in a military sense. But its ideologies live on, for example, in children who grew up under its regime. Other challenges remain as well.
Six Australian Super Hornet aircraft have been deployed for the last three years over Iraq and Syria as part of the US-led, anti-"Islamic State" coalition. Australian special forces in the region are to remain.
