Trump Tower roof catches fire

Firefighters rushed to Trump Tower after a small blaze broke out on the roof in bustling Manhattan on Monday.

Besides housing businesses and luxury apartments, the building is also US President Donald Trump's private residence in New York. The president was in Washington, DC at the time of the fire.

The New York Fire Department said on its alert system account that the fire was "under control."

Two civilians and one firefighter were lightly injured.

Footage of the tower showed white smoke billowing from the top, while around a dozen firefighters stood on the roof of the 68-story structure.

Eric Trump, one of the president's sons, said on Twitter that the blaze was a "small electrical fire in a cooling tower." He also thanked the New York Fire Department, saying they are "true heroes and deserve our most sincere thanks and praise!"

President Trump moved out of Trump Tower and into the White House in Washington following his inauguration almost one year ago. His wife Melania and youngest son Barron joined him the following summer.
