Fenerbahce-Galatasaray: The German connection
Galatasaray and Lukas Podolski drew 1-1 with arch-rivals Fenerbahce in Istanbul on Sunday. A number of German players have helped make this derby one of the fiercest in world football. Here's a pictorial look.
Lukas Podolski
Podolski didn't get a goal in the latest edition of the Fenerbahce-Galatasaray derby. The 30-year-old, capped 126 times by Germany, is looking to reinvigorate his career following tough spells at Arsenal and Inter Milan. He has averaged a goal every two games so far in Istanbul.
Joachim Löw
The little known fact about Joachim Löw's career was that he coached Turkish powerhouses Fenerbahce. Löw, the national team coach and World Cup winner, moved to Istanbul after a spell at Stuttgart, but lasted no more than a season before moving back to Karlsruhe.
Toni Schumacher
For three years, Fenerbahce fans worshipped 'Toni' Schumacher. The famous German goalkeeper made more than 400 appearances for Cologne and was capped 76 times for the national team. His move to Fenerbahce was out of the blue, but he became captain and led the side to the league championship in 1989.
Jupp Derwall
Jupp Derwall was the former German national team coach at Euro 1980 and World Cup 1982. After his death in 2007, Galatasaray named their training ground after him. In a three-year stint at Galatasaray between 1984 and 1987, Derwall changed the fortunes of the Istanbul club, ending a 15-year championship drought and laying the foundations for future successes.
Werner Lorant
Lorant played for Schalke and Borussia Dortmund as a player. His coaching career spanned 15 clubs in 16 seasons - his stint at Fenerbahce lasting just part of the 2002-03 season. But Lorant will be remembered for coaching the side which hammered Galatasaray 6-0 in one of the most famous meetings in recent years.
Koray Günter
Born in the town of Höxter, Günter represented Germany at youth level while on the books at Borussia Dortmund. But the 21-year-old opted to represent Turkey at full international level and joined Galatasaray in 2014. Günter was a Dortmund player from the age of eight, but made just one league appearance for the club. Dortmund are able to buy the player back for seven million euros.
Karl-Heinz Feldkamp
Feldkamp won the German and Turkish championships as a coach, a career that spanned almost three decades. The 81-year-old was immensely popular in Istanbul after joining Galatasaray in 1992. He had a spell at city rivals Besiktas before returning to Galatasaray in 2008 to become assistant trainer to Michael Skibbe.
Christoph Daum
Christoph Daum has coached some of the biggest clubs in Germany before reports of cocaine abuse soured his reputation. Daum won two championships in three seasons at Fenerbahce and returned for a second spell in 2009. He also coached Bursaspor between 2013 and 2014.
