Beleaguered Bundesliga club Bochum came closer to relegation after succumbing to a 2-0 away defeat to Cologne.
Serbian international Zoran Tosic scored both goals in the Friday night soccer clash, the first courtesy of a defense-splitting pass from teammate Taner Yalcin after 15 minutes.
Midfielder Tosic took the ball around goalkeeper Philipp Heerwagen before placing it into an empty net.
Tosic managed to double his tally on 78 minutes after a one-two with Germany striker Lukas Podolski.
Gift for home fans
The result, which lifts Cologne clear of any possible relegation battle to 37 points, was a welcome one for the home fans.
"We wanted to give something back to the crowd because we haven't often won at home," said Cologne's trainer Zvonimir Soldo.
Although the score line places Bochum squarely in the relegation dogfight on 28 points, trainer Heiko Herrlich remained optimistic.
"I'm still upbeat that we can make it. We are not relegated yet. We must fight together to reach our goal," said Herrlich.
League leaders and football powerhouse Bayern Munich are to play Hanover on Saturday, while title rivals Schalke face Borussia Moenchengladbach.
