China has accused the US of spying. The US insists that its vessel, the Impeccable, was operating legally in international waters, when Chinese vessels surrounded it at the weekend.

Beijing claims most of the South China Sea around its coast as either part of its territorial waters or its 200 nautical-mile wide exclusive economic zone.

The row comes as Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi is in Washington to meet with U.S. officials.
