Reports on 06 April 2012 indicate that a Tuareg rebels group known as the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north of Mali have declared independence for a region they are calling Azawad, after seizing control of the area following their advances southward and in the wake of the 21 March coup. It called on the international community to recognize the new nation and said it would respect the borders of neighbouring states. The UN Security Council on 04 April condemned the rebel attacks in northern Mali and called for an end to the violence.
