The UNICEF-supported centre provides food, shelter, basic education and vocational training, as well as recreational and other activities, for former child soldiers. It also helps the children reunite with their families and reintegrate into their communities. The average stay at the centre is three months. From 1 to 4 March 2011, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo to promote increased polio eradication efforts and to review programmes responding to the continuing extreme sexual violence against women and girls and the impact of the ongoing conflict on children. He was accompanied by UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa (WCAR) Gianfranco Rotigliano. During his visit, Mr. Lake met with President Joseph Kabila Kabange and other officials and partner representatives in Kinshasa, the capital, and visited sites where health workers are battling a rapidly spreading polio outbreak. He also visited eastern areas of the country, where he met with survivors of sexual violence and with conflict-affected children, as well as with volunteers and other humanitarian response partners. Polio, which appeared to have been eradicated in the country by 2005, has re-emerged, with 112 new cases reported between January 2010 and February 2011. In response, a door-to-door campaign to vaccinate more than 14 million children by the end of May is underway. UNICEF is also supporting a range of other related interventions. To combat the continuing epidemic of sexual violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, UNICEF also supports programmes to increase the quality, delivery and access to essential services for survivors, training for police and military staff, and direct advocacy with political leaders.
