Doctor Shortage -- Hoyerswerda Takes On More Foreign Physicians

In the past, Hoyerswerda in Saxony made headlines for a spate of xenophobic attacks. But recently the town threw out the welcome mat to foreign doctors. Now non-Germans comprise half of the physicians at the local hospital. While this hiring drive is mainly due to a doctor shortage in the region, the town councilors are also pleased that Hoyerswerda is becoming more multicultural.
