Kelompok pemberontak Tuareg bersama mitranya, kelompok jaringan teror Al Qaida, mengawasi hampir seluruh kawasan utara Mali. Demikian dikatakan wakil sekretaris PBB urusan politik Lynn Pascoe di New York.

The coup in Mali sparked on 21 March 2012 by junior military officers disgruntled with the way the government was handling the Taureg invasion from the north, has brought widespread international condemnation. In the country's north a rebellion by nomadic Tuareg tribesmen has been gaining momentum for months buoyed by the return of many Tuaregs who were formerly hired as gunmen in Libya.
