Senior Researcher and Head of Section, Data and Geographic Information Systems, Bonn International Center for Conversion, Germany
A geographer by training, Lars Wirkus joined the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) in 2000 as a researcher. At present, he is senior researcher and head of section for data and geographic information systems (GIS), which he had been developing since 2009. His current work focuses on developing and implementing databases and GIS-based applications as well as on remote sensing and earth observation in the context of applied conflict and security research. Besides contributing online mapping components to various BICC projects, Wirkus has been responsible for the development and implementation of the information portal on war and peace for use in the German Federal Agency for Civic Education’s (bpb) online services (http://sicherheitspolitik.bpb.de). Currently he coordinates BICC’s contribution to research projects in which remote sensing technologies are used to develop services to assess, analyze and monitor natural resources exploration in post-conflict countries.
