Why has Russia had to narrow down its war aims in Ukraine?

Russia's three-month war against Ukraine has exposed unexpected weaknesses in the country's armed forces. Heavy troop and equipment losses have reportedly hurt morale even more, and the war's initial aims have been severely scaled back.
