A riot broke out in a police station jail in Venezuela's Carabobo state Wednesday. At least 68 people died, government officials said.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said Washington plans to do more to support Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido. Guaido, who was defying a travel plan to speak in Colombia, plans to travel on to Europe.
Edgar Zambrano had been detained on charges of treason following a failure to seize control in April. His allies have said his liberation was a result of global pressure and not one of goodwill from President Maduro.
Venezuela's special police forces (FAES) killed 29 inmates in what the authorities described as a failed escape attempt from a detention center. Activists reject the official version of events.
Authorities say at least 68 people have been killed after a fire broke out in one of Venezuela's overcrowded jails. An inmates' rights organization said the blaze followed an attempted jailbreak.
