Climate Action needs Media Freedom

UNFCCC Chief Espinosa acknowledges DW Akademie

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa comments on DW Akademie's work "as a positive contribution to sustainable development" in the context of climate action and COP23.

In an exclusive statement, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) , comments on the work of DW Akademie:

“A well informed and educated public, supported by excellent access to up-to-date and impartial information, will be vital for realizing the global  transition to a low carbon, resilient, climate-friendly future now underway. Equally vital is freedom of speech and media freedom so that views and knowledge can be shared without fear or prejudice ; new, inspiring ideas can be illuminated quickly and roadblocks to a better future moved aside”.

“So I thank the DW Akademie for their work in these intertwined fields as a positive contribution to sustainable development. Men and woman everywhere need to understand what is stake in terms of their countries, communities and families; need to be prepared for the risks and seismic shifts in the way societies are set to evolve and need the information that can allow them to play their part in shaping a sustainable future."
