Turkey’s unfolding humanitarian crisis

Kathleen Schuster
February 22, 2023

On this week’s show, we hear from doctors and aid workers on the ground in Kahranmanmaras, Turkey not far from the epicenter of the earthquakes that struck earlier this month. Plus, in China we’ll hear from ambitious young men and women who are giving up good jobs to pursue happiness.

Earlier this month, southeastern Turkey suffered staggering losses in the wake of two major earthquakes. Hans Kluge, the Europe director for the World Health Organisation, has called it "the worst natural disaster in the region in a century."

Reporter Ylenia Gostoli traveled to the city of Kahranmanmaras, which also saw widespread destruction. Doctors and healthcare workers weigh in on how catastrophe has impacted their jobs and disaster response as authorities warn of the impact of dire conditions on the spread of disease.

Plus, an inside look at the tang ping movement in China. The country's intense 9-9-6 work culture, in other words 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week, has caused the younger workforce to reevaluate their lives. Some are even quitting well-paying jobs for a life of relaxation and, well, "living."

Reporter Eva Lamby-Schmitt presents a compelling picture of China's present, past and future through the prism of this contentious movement.
