Würzburg to Füssen

The Romantic Road was a marketing idea from the 1950s: a route from Würzburg to Füssen with sightseeing opportunities along the way. Tourists who come to Germany are familiar with it, but does the idea still work?

Füssen vom Kalvarienberg aus nach Norden. Füssen ist eine Stadt im schwäbischen Landkreis Ostallgäu. Sie liegt im Südwesten Bayerns an der Romantischen Straße und an der Via Claudia Augusta. --- Durch die Stadt fließt der Lech. Im Gebiet der Stadt liegen Hopfensee, Weißensee, Alatsee, Eschacher Weiher und Wiedemannweiher. Am Faulenbach, der den Alatsee zum Lech hin entwässert, liegen Obersee und Mittersee. Mit 808 Metern ü. NN ist Füssen die höchstgelegene Stadt Bayerns. ----- Vermutlich hat es aber bereits im Jahre 260 ein römisches Militärlager an dieser Stelle gegeben. Sein Name Foetibus wird als Latinisierung des germanischen fot (Fuß) verstanden. We sent three people out on the road to see. Three students - from Tokyo, a Berlin and New York - explore the Romantic Road from Würzburg to Füssen. They travel 400 kilometers in a vintage car to the Neuschwanstein Castle. Stops include Rothenburg ob der Tauber with a city tour and lots of local attractions and the town of Dinkelsbühl complete with a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

They discover that the old Setra travel buses were the main means of transport on the Romantic Road in the 1960s and that Bavarians take their traditions very seriously. The journey ends in Füssen at the doorstep of the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle. The students enjoy the trip but think the old Romantic Road marketing concept could use a few fresh ideas.
